How To Make Your Bouquet Last Long

Learning how to make your fresh flowers last longer is one of the best ways to enjoy your bouquet after delivery. Whether you have received fresh flowers for a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion, proper care will help keep them looking beautiful for longer. With a few simple steps, you can significantly extend the life of your arrangement and enjoy your flowers for days or even weeks:

Trim the Stems Before Placing in Water

Should you cut flower stems? Yes - Even though the flowers stems are cut before leaving us, re-cutting the stems before placing them in a vase will allow them to absorb water more efficiently. We recommend trimming the stems 1/2 an inch above the base of the bouquet.

This allows the bouquets stems a greater surface area to consume water, we also believe that a diagonal cut works best - Re-cut the stems once every few days when you change the water within the vase to keep them both hydrated and healthy.

Use a Clean Vase with Fresh Water

Bacteria in dirty vases are notorious for cutting a bouquets life expectancy in half, ensure you have pre-washed the vase before filling it, and continue to wash your vase regularly with warm soapy water - So how often should you replace the flower water? Once the vase has been cleaned and the bouquet of flowers is placed inside, replace the water every 1-3 days to keep it fresh whilst preventing any further bacteria growth.

Add Flower Food if Available

Every bouquet that we deliver both Nationwide and within Dublin is sent out with a sachet of cut flower food. This flower food plays a vital part in keeping your flowers fresh for longer and is to be added just after the water - If you don't have additional cut flower food readily available after the first use, we recommend using a tea spoon of sugar which will help provide nutrients for the flowers.

Keep Flowers Away from Heat and Direct Sunlight

One of the biggest mistakes we see from people trying to make their bouquet last as long as possible is that they are keeping it directly beside a heat source. Warm environments cause flowers to mature at a faster rate resulting in them opening up and shortening their life span.

Place your bouquet in a cool area away from direct sunlight, radiators, or other heat sources.

Keep Flowers Away from Fruit

Believe it or not, it's best to avoid keeping your bouquet in close proximity to fruit and vegetables due to the gases they can emit. Ethylene acts as a natural plant hormone regulating growth, fruit ripening, and leaf aging however it also causes flowers and their stems to wilt at a faster rate.

Keeping that in mind it's also best practice to keep your bouquet away from any fruit bowls and out of the kitchen to ensure they can last longer.

Remove Wilting Flowers and Leaves

As flowers begin to age, remove any wilted petals, leaves, or stems from the arrangement. Decaying plant material can spread bacteria in the water and affect the rest of the bouquet.

Regularly checking your bouquet and removing fading flowers will help keep the remaining blooms looking fresh.

Clean Your Vase Before Your Next Bouquet

To help your future bouquets, ensure the vase is cleaned after each use - This removes any bacteria that may have been missed and will ensure a clean environment providing your next bouquet the best possible start.

If you care for your bouquet properly, most fresh flowers can last 7–14 days, depending on the variety. Following these simple steps will help you enjoy your flowers for as long as possible.
