What to Send When Someone Has a Baby in Ireland

by Cian Burrowes on April 16, 2026

Quick answer: Send to the home, not the hospital, and wait a few days if you can. A gift bundle works best because it gives the parents something for themselves as well as a bouquet for the room. If it is a second or third baby, a gift is still welcome and often more appreciated because fewer people think to send one.

A new baby is one of those occasions where people genuinely want to do something kind but are not always sure what the right move is. Do you send flowers straight away or wait? Do you send to the hospital or the house? What do you get for a second child when you already sent a big bouquet for the first?

When Should You Send Flowers After a Baby Is Born?

The honest answer is that a few days after the birth and directly to the home, tends to work best. The day or two immediately after the birth is often the busiest and most overwhelming time for new parents. A steady stream of visitors, phone calls, and arrangements means flowers arriving at that exact moment can get lost in the chaos. Waiting three to five days means your bouquet arrives when things have quietened down a little and it actually gets noticed.

Should You Send to the Hospital or the Home?

Send it to their house. Most new mothers are only in hospital for one or two days after a straightforward birth. By the time flowers are arranged and delivered, there is a reasonable chance she will already be home. Beyond that, many maternity wards in Ireland have restrictions on flowers in patient rooms, particularly in shared wards.

What Flowers Work Best for a New Baby?

Soft colours are the most popular choice. Pale pinks, creams, whites and gentle blues all work well. They feel celebratory without being overwhelming. If you know the baby's gender and want to lean into that, we have two bundles built exactly for this occasion.

The Pink Bundle is €99.99 and is one of our best-selling gift sets. It combines the Pretty in Pink bouquet, fresh pink roses, large-headed gerbera and sweet william, with a bottle of Montegrande Prosecco and a box of Butlers Truffles. The flowers are for the room, the prosecco and chocolates are for the parents. It arrives as one delivery, nothing to arrange separately.

The Blue Bundle is also €99.99 and is built around the Blue Moon bouquet, roses, hydrangea and lisianthus in cool blue and lilac tones. Instead of chocolates, it includes a soft teddy bear and Montegrande Prosecco. The teddy gives it a personal touch that goes beyond a standard flower delivery, and it is a natural choice for a baby boy.

A hand-tied bouquet of fresh flowers featuring blues and whites, accompanied by a plush teddy bear and a bottle of prosecco.

If you do not know the gender, or want something more neutral, a cream or white bouquet with chocolates as an add-on is always a safe and an appreciated choice.

What About a Second or Third Baby?

This is one of the most overlooked situations in gifting. The first baby gets all the flowers, hampers, cards and visitors. By the second or third, a lot of people assume the parents have everything they need and quietly do nothing.

A thoughtful bouquet or gift bundle for a second or third baby often means more than the gesture did the first time around because it's less expected. You do not need to go as big as you did for the first.

Is It Too Late to Send After a Few Weeks After The Birth?

Not at all. In fact, sending something three or four weeks after the birth is often best.

The first week or two is usually a blur of visitors, phone calls, hampers and cards. By week three, most of that has tapered off. The house is quieter, the parents are deeper into the sleep deprivation stage, and the novelty for everyone else has worn off. That is often the exact moment a bouquet arriving at the door feels like a genuine lift rather than another thing to find a vase for.

There is no window on this. A month in, two months in, a gift to mark the new arrival is still a kind gesture and still appreciated. If anything, the later it arrives, the more it stands out.

What if I Want to Send a Gift as Well as Flowers?

If you want to send something that covers all the bases, the Pink Bundle and Blue Bundle are both designed for this. Flowers, a bottle of prosecco for the parents, and either chocolates or a teddy for the baby, all in one delivery and If you are not sure what to choose, get in touch and we will help you pick the right thing or shop our entire range here: https://theflowerfactory.ie/
